Smart 451ED Valhala 2 project – 22kWh battery pack

Smart 451ED with 22 kWh and almost 200 km range – Valhalla Project #2

Where Mercedes gave up, we continued – by developing a brand-new battery system built from recycled LG Chem E63 modules sourced from the electric Twingo, while retaining the original thermal management and BMS safety system. Our first pack passed 8 month test.

The lifecycle of an EV doesn’t have to end after 12 years. By replacing the battery system with new technology, there’s no reason to scrap the entire chassis just because of one component. Thanks to their simple design, electric motors can easily run for a million kilometers – and with proper servicing, for another million more.

Since Mercedes discontinued battery supply for this model, these cars were essentially sentenced to unsustainable removal from the road in case of failure. Our goal is to prevent that – because the Smart ED remains one of the best city cars ever made, even though it was initially launched only as a “compliance vehicle.”

In fact, Mercedes had already been supplying only “patchwork” replacement packs for years – built from used but still functional cells taken from other batteries. By 2024, even these were no longer available. To make matters worse, in the Smart ED a simple 12-volt battery failure can lead to the destruction of the entire high-voltage pack.

Ultimately, even Mercedes had to rely on independent specialists, as third-party workshops proved to be more capable of repairing these batteries than the OEM itself.

While we won’t be able to offer this battery to everyone, pre-orders are now open for the first 10 clients. And for those who want to perform the retrofit themselves – contact us, as we have modules in stock.
