After the first case, detailed analysis, and insider information, we have learned that the ERAD – a hybrid electric motor with a rear-axle differential, separated from the fossil drivetrain – is one of Volvo’s biggest failures that was never subject to a recall despite a serial defect. The safety risk is serious, as it can cause rear wheel lock-up at higher speeds.
The issue originates from two main causes. The first is a serial fault in the speed sensor reading, which causes the differential to engage at incorrect rotor and wheel speeds, leading to mechanical failure. The second, even more critical cause, is the failure of the snap ring (seger) that holds the differential bearing in position within the housing. The snap ring has a reduced thickness at the tab ends which, due to thermal expansion, bearing load, and vibrations, can break off a piece approximately 2 cm long. This fragment can jam into the gears and drivetrain, completely destroying the system.
We have encountered both problems — a faulty sensor and a broken snap ring that shattered the differential. The vehicle has 245,000 km, but failures can occur as early as 50,000 km, representing a clear factory defect that ultimately falls on the owner.
After two months of research, an eDrive Reman Kit has been developed, along with an EVC Academy repair guideline covering both root causes and the full repair and calibration procedure.

Nakon prvog slučaja, detaljne analize i insider informacija, saznajemo da je ERAD – hibridni električni motor s diferencijalom na stražnjem pogonu, odvojen od fosilnog pogona – jedan od najvećih Volvo promašaja koji nikada nije stavljen u opoziv unatoč serijskoj grešci. Opasnost u prometu je ozbiljna jer može doći do blokiranja stražnjih kotača pri većim brzinama.
Problem proizlazi iz dva glavna uzroka. Prvi je serijska greška očitanja speed senzora, zbog koje se diferencijal uklapa pri pogrešnoj brzini rotora i kotača, što dovodi do njegovog lomljenja. Drugi, još fatalniji razlog, je pucanje zegera (snap ringa) koji drži ležaj diferencijala u poziciji kućišta. Zeger ima stanjenje na krajevima ušica koja, zbog termičkog istezanja, naprezanja ležaja i vibracija, uzrokuju odlamanje komada od približno 2 cm. Taj komad zatim zaglavi u zupčanicima i prijenosu te potpuno uništava sustav.
Mi smo čak imali oba problema – i neispravan senzor i puknuti zeger koji je polomio diferencijal. Vozilo ima 245.000 km, ali kvar se može pojaviti već na 50.000 km te predstavlja potpunu tvorničku grešku koja pada na teret vlasnika.
Nakon dva mjeseca istraživanja pripremljen je eDrive Reman Kit te EVC Academy uputstvo za oba uzroka, zajedno s procedurom reparacije i kalibracije.

I was considering to buy XC60 Inscription T8 car from march 2020, with PHEV motorization and 63.000Km.
The car doesnt show any sign of this problem, and bought from a renowned dealer will have 1 year gurantee, altough I just came across the problem for these models with the ERAD and the possible solution you offer.
I live in Villach, Austria, so I wanted to get more information from you before buying.
Do you advise to buy it? What if the ERAD module fails? Is it possible to get it repaired in Ljubljana? Is there any preventive examination that can be done?
What would be the price of the repairing?
