This BMW i3 electric motor is a brand new, unused hybrid synchronous drive unit built to original specification. It is the main traction motor mounted on the rear axle, driving the wheels through the single-speed reduction gearbox.
Signs your BMW i3 electric motor is failing
- Reduced power, drivetrain derating or limp home mode
- Drivetrain fault warnings with electric machine or rotor position sensor errors stored
- Insulation resistance faults triggering an isolation warning on the high voltage system
- Grinding, knocking or bearing rumble that follows motor speed rather than road speed
- Overheating warnings or repeated shutdowns after short periods of hard driving
- Coolant contamination inside the motor housing
A failed motor is often the result of stator winding insulation breakdown, rotor bearing wear or resolver damage. Fitting a new unit restores full output and removes the risk of a further fault damaging the connected power electronics.
Fitment and installation
Suits BMW i3 models from 2015 to 2022, including both battery-electric and range extender versions.
Replacement requires removal of the rear drive unit and safe discharge of the high voltage system. Work must be carried out by a workshop qualified for high voltage vehicles. After fitting, the drive unit requires coolant refill, bleeding and a diagnostic adaptation of the rotor position sensor before the vehicle will release drive. If not properly installed and if damaged during DIY installation, warranty claim is fully denied for inproperly connected NEW electronic devices.
Warranty
12 months or 20,000 km, whichever comes first. Warranty covers manufacturing and material defects on the supplied part. Correct installation, coolant fill, torque values and post-fitting adaptation are the responsibility of the installing workshop.
