One of the most common questions we receive after battery repairs is about the yellow dotted line on the energy display. Many owners worry that this indicates a defect or a problem with the repair. In reality, this feature is a normal part of Tesla’s battery management system (BMS), designed to protect and optimize the battery’s performance.
Why does the yellow line appear?
The yellow dotted bar indicates a temporary power limitation. This is not a fault – it is a safety measure that ensures the battery and drivetrain remain within safe operating conditions.
The most common reasons include:
- Cold battery temperature – when the battery is cold, the chemical reactions inside the cells are slower. The BMS limits power to prevent stress or damage.
- High battery temperature – when overheated, the system reduces performance to avoid thermal degradation and extend battery life.
- Low state of charge (SOC under 50%) – power is limited to protect the cells from excessive voltage drop under load.
- Inactive or insufficient cooling/heating – if the HVAC system (which also manages battery thermal regulation) is not running or has not yet reached optimal conditions.
A Normal Function, Not a Fault
It is important to emphasize: the yellow dotted line is not a sign of battery failure, nor is it related to the repair process. This is standard behavior across older Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles and a key function of how the BMS maintains safe, reliable operation.
Unfortunately, some owners repeatedly pressure us, insisting that the appearance of the yellow line means the battery is defective. Let us be very clear: this is not a fault. It is a normal occurrence on all older Teslas. The Battery Management System is actively doing its job – regulating performance, protecting the cells, and ensuring the battery remains within optimal operating conditions.
Tesla’s thermal management constantly balances cell temperatures, while the BMS monitors voltage differences and adjusts power output accordingly. This intelligent control is what guarantees both safety and long-term durability of the battery – not a sign of something being broken.
If there are no active errors on the alert list starting with BMS_xxxx, then it is 100% not a battery fault. ✅
Bottom line
The appearance of the yellow dotted line is not a problem – it is proof that Tesla’s intelligent system is doing its job: protecting the battery and preparing it for optimal performance.
If the line appears occasionally – especially in cold or hot conditions, or when the battery is below 50% state of charge – this is completely normal. Only if the limitation persists under ideal conditions should a diagnostic check be considered.
